Posted: 16:44 01 Aug 06 #1
Hi, I've just swapped my old Ipaq 3760 for a slightly newer 3870 (bluetooth) one BUT am having some problems ! I have upgraded the ROM from Windows Pocket PC 2002 to Windows Pocket PC 2003 and am unsure if this has any bearing on what I'm trying to do, or not ? The problem is probably a simple one to solve BUT I can't seem to get my unit to Hard Reset ? I'm pressing buttons 1 and 4, alond with the Soft Reset buttons simultaneouskly BUT it doesn't want to work ? Can anyone out their please help me ? Thanks barclayrob

Not sure what you mean by buttons one and four. Do they correspond to calendar and an arrow button?

Hi Selene, Apologies I didn't make myself very clear. The buttons I'm pressing for the hard reset are the calendar (bottom left) and itask (bottom right) along with the soft reset buttom - all simultaneously. Thanks, barclayrob

Hi barclayrob,

Hmm, you're pressing the right buttons so I don't understand why it isn't working.. Are you able to perform soft resets ok?

Hi again Selene and thanks for your continued assistance.

I've checked every forum / thread I can find as, as you state, I'm pretty sure I'm doing the right thing ! I can perform soft resets OK AND the two other buttons mentioned also work OK - I can't understand this at all. The only thing I can put this down to is POSSIBLY:
a) The fact I've upgraded the ROM (as stated in first message),
b) Perhaps the Ipaq isn't the model I thought it was* ?

* To explain I purchased this, off e-bay, and it was advertised as a 3900 series. When it arrived all the manuals etc... were for a 3900 series BUT the microsoft sticker, on the back case, clearly stated it was a 3870 ! Perhaps this is a different case to the 'guts' of the Compaq although I can say for sure it is the same style / DEFINATELY either a 3800 OR 3900 series (which look totally different to the previous 3700 models AND the following 5000 models -they have the black plastic "Compaq" bit at the top !) I can also confirm it has bluetooth (tested as OK) so, again, this narrows down the EXACT model further !

ARE THEIR DIFFERENT HARD RESET METHODS FOR THE DIFFERENT, SPECIFIC MODELS WITHIN THE 3800 AND 3900 SERIES IPAQ'S POSSIBLY ?

I'm really stumped on this one - I did try opening up the case and disconnecting the battery, last night, and this performed the same as a Hard Reset HOWEVER this is most inconvenient and not very practical as I'm sure you would agree.

HELP !!!

Kind regards,

(a desperate) barclayrob

Just my tuppence worth here - I have an iPAQ hx4700 and the reset method is exactly the same; buttons one and four held, then push the pin into the reset hole (or stylus in my case). You have to hold the 1&4 buttons down until the machine boots for it to work properly though - that's the only other thing I could suggest.

I've owned both the 3870 and 3970 - they use the same hard reset method. You could try Pete's suggestion and see if that makes any difference. Apart from that, the only other thing I can suggest is calling HP....

You need to press and hold down the calendar and arrow keys simultaneously. Then press the reset button on the bottom of the unit - and hold it pressed for at least 5 seconds (holding the other keys as well). The screen will blank out. If it doesn't come back on by itself, releas all keys, wait a second, and then press the reset button on the bottom again. The unit should be totally reset (ie. hard reset).
