Unlocked (what's this?)
What is an "Unlocked" phone?
Many cell phones are designed to use a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card to store subscriber data. These SIM cards are issued by the carrier and provide cell service to the phone. "Locked" cell phones will only recognize SIM cards from the carrier that originally provided the phone. Almost every cell phone provided by a US carrier is locked to that carrier’s network.
"Unlocked" cell phones will recognize SIM cards from any carrier using Global System Mobile Communications (GSM) technology. Customers with "unlocked" cell phones are able to use any GSM carrier of their choosing, including "pre-pay" or "no contract" SIM card options. "Unlocked" cell phones also accept international SIM cards that provide discounted rates while traveling abroad.

Best Android experience out there.
Brilliant device. Perfect size, super high res, pretty AMOLED display. Great dual-core performance. 4G speed (and GSM compatibility) without the battery life issues of LTE. And, get real, guys--16GB is plenty. Storing media locally is so 2008. Install Google Music, Pandora, Spotify, and stream to your heart's content!

Great phone
No phone can be all things to all people, so it's up to you to select the best phone _for you_. The guy who rated this phone with 1 star just because it does not come with an SD card is laughable at best. Point is: this phone comes with only 16GB of storage, non expandable. But it has the best screen ever in a phone under 5", period. It's also stock Android and comes with the fastest updates directly from Google. Ice Cream Sandwich makes a world of a difference compared to Gingerbread (previous versions), and it's certainly guaranteed to work with (possibly) Jelly Bean. There are many advantages of having a Nexus with this superb screen, with stock system. It's just beautiful. Now it's up to you to see if it's worth the trade-off. For me, it is. This phone is 5 stars (at least closer to 5 than to 4) for its target audience. Because it's not for everyone doesn't mean it can't be a 5 star phone.
