Unlocked (what's this?)
What is an "Unlocked" phone?
Many cell phones are designed to use a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card to store subscriber data. These SIM cards are issued by the carrier and provide cell service to the phone. "Locked" cell phones will only recognize SIM cards from the carrier that originally provided the phone. Almost every cell phone provided by a US carrier is locked to that carrier’s network.
"Unlocked" cell phones will recognize SIM cards from any carrier using Global System Mobile Communications (GSM) technology. Customers with "unlocked" cell phones are able to use any GSM carrier of their choosing, including "pre-pay" or "no contract" SIM card options. "Unlocked" cell phones also accept international SIM cards that provide discounted rates while traveling abroad.

HTC Wildfire S Features
The HTC Wildfire S is the excellent entry-level smartphone that is the successor to the compact and feature-packed Wildfire from 2010. Though an introductory Android model the Wildfire S does not compromise on smartphone features or quality; it's tiny, curved unibody metal chassis is satisfyingly solid, and feels great in your hands.
Inside the high-quality design the Wildfire S builds on the features of its predecessor with a 3.2 inch HVGA touchscreen which has twice the resolution of the original, plus the latest version of the Andriod operating system (Gingerbread) under the hood. The 600MHz processor might not be the biggest, but paired with HTC's Sense interface on the Android platform they give a good performance in all the smartphone fundamentals such as web browsing and app usage. The Wildfire S also has a 5 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi (B/G/N), Bluetooth 3.0 and a memory card slot, meaning it can more than hold its own against rival mid-level smartphones on the market.
Features you'll love:
- Small, lightweight entry-level Android phone with full smartphone functionality
- Lovely unibody design provides excellent build-quality and feel
- 3.2 inch touchscreen is clear and bright
- 5 megapixel camera, WiFi and all modern smartphone features in tiny package
- Latest version of Android (Gingerbread) installed with HTC's user-friendly Sense interface for intuitive operation
What we say:
“ If you’re looking for an Android smartphone on a budget or one that you can hide in the palm of your hand, but don't want to lose any of the latest smartphone features, HTC's Wildfire S is a great choice. While it won't break any records for speed, it still runs impressively smoothly, and with it's unibody design the Wildfire S feels good sitting in your palm. Many will love its compact size, cute looks and full Android experience. ”

Winner
I was loathe to abandon my trusty Nokia for a smartphone, but was impressed by the HTCs my friends were spotting. I have now had this phone for 6 months, and haven't found it to be lacking in any regard. It is so lovely and small also.
