BlackBerry® Bold™ 9000 Smartphone (Unlocked, QWERTY)

Unlocked (what's this?)

What is an "Unlocked" phone?

Many cell phones are designed to use a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card to store subscriber data. These SIM cards are issued by the carrier and provide cell service to the phone. "Locked" cell phones will only recognize SIM cards from the carrier that originally provided the phone. Almost every cell phone provided by a US carrier is locked to that carrier’s network.

"Unlocked" cell phones will recognize SIM cards from any carrier using Global System Mobile Communications (GSM) technology. Customers with "unlocked" cell phones are able to use any GSM carrier of their choosing, including "pre-pay" or "no contract" SIM card options. "Unlocked" cell phones also accept international SIM cards that provide discounted rates while traveling abroad.

Brilliant

I've ditched my Nokia N95 8Gb for this and I've got not regrets or complaints. Screen is superb, keyboard is superb, connectivity is superb, O/S is superb.

A good phone, but could be even better

The screen on this handset is wonderful and blows the E71 out of the water. It's not just the resolution either, but the colours and contrast that this phone is capable of displaying. The keyboard is wonderful, and I especially like the little things that the blackberry does. For example if you type an email address with spaces it will figure out that those spaces should be an '@' and '.' respectively. No need to deal with shift keys to get at the special characters. However there are a couple of downsides to the Blackberry 9000. This phone does not seem to have any real choice in software. Popular sites such as pocketgear.com don't even offer the 9000 as an option yet for software downloads, and even RIMs own website that gets shown in the browser does not seem to show much in the way of software. I can understand 3rd parties taking time to get to grips with the 9000, but surely RIM could have done a better job at offering something? This is a good phone, and although I prefer the trackball than the directional buttons on the E71, I did find myself repeatedly moving my finger to scroll an awful lot, especially in the web browser. Perhaps RIM could make the trackball touch sensitive so that you could hold the trackball in a given direction and it would continue to scroll until you remove the finger/thumb from the trackball?
