Unlocked (what's this?)
What is an "Unlocked" phone?
Many cell phones are designed to use a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card to store subscriber data. These SIM cards are issued by the carrier and provide cell service to the phone. "Locked" cell phones will only recognize SIM cards from the carrier that originally provided the phone. Almost every cell phone provided by a US carrier is locked to that carrier’s network.
"Unlocked" cell phones will recognize SIM cards from any carrier using Global System Mobile Communications (GSM) technology. Customers with "unlocked" cell phones are able to use any GSM carrier of their choosing, including "pre-pay" or "no contract" SIM card options. "Unlocked" cell phones also accept international SIM cards that provide discounted rates while traveling abroad.

Good as a Basic Smartphone
I bought a Samsung Galaxy Pro for use as my main phone. I have AT&T GoPhone (prepaid) service, so finding an Android phone with a hardware keyboard that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg was a tough task. Even though I’ve only had my Galaxy Pro for a couple of days, I’ve already racked more than three hours of phone calls and have tested most of what this phone has to offer so here is my take. First things first: If you need to use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth at the same time, stop reading after this paragraph. Click on the Expansys logo on the upper-left corner of the website and do a search for any other phone, as the Galaxy Pro is NOT for you. If you only need to use Wi-Fi or Bluetooth at any given time, the Galaxy Pro will work for you. The Design: Now, the phone’s body is surprisingly thin for a phone with a hardware keyboard and speaking of the keyboard, it is super comfy to type on. The “Pro” moniker really fits this phone because it looks professional. It doesn’t feel professional though, but that’s because Samsung insists on using mostly plastic for their phones. But even high-end Samsung phone suffer from the lack of metal bodies so Galaxy Pro owners don’t need to feel inferior to their Samsung-toting brethren. Powering the phone on for the first time, yields a very minimalistic experience. You do not get the typical Android startup wizard and you are only asked about allowing Google to use your location for tailoring their services to where you are. But stuff like setting up your Google account so you can sync your contacts and messages is left for you to figure out. If you have used Android before, these settings can be found where you expect to find them, but first time Android users will have a hard time figuring essential stuff out unless they read the manual… and we know how many people actually read the manual! On the plus side though, the Galaxy Pro recognized my AT&T SIM card and configured the data and MMS settings automatically. The Screen: There is no way to sugar coat this. The screen is very low-end. It has the lowest resolution you can find on any smartphone, and some text looks so bad Samsung gives you the option to download custom fonts. You could also download Talkback from the Accessibility panel and have the system menus and items spoken to you – it isn’t a fully usable solution for totally blind users but it helps those with limited vision and those whose eyes need a break from looking at such a low-res screen. To add insult to injury, the touchscreen doesn’t support multitouch, so you can kiss pinch-to-zoom goodbye. The Radios: There is an FM radio that you can use if you plug the included wired stereo headset. But we normally don’t refer to that kind of radio when we talk about cell phones. The phone radio performs well. I have not had a single dropped call, which is impressive given AT&T’s reputation, and all my calls connect quickly and with good audio quality on both sides of the conversation. The version of the Galaxy Pro sold by Expansys has AT&T-compatible 3G bands and connection to AT&T’s 3G network is good. I cannot give you an accurate measure of data speeds, because I’m on a prepaid plan, and AT&T treats this phone as a non-smartphone. This means unlimited data on prepaid does work on the Galaxy Pro (something not available on AT&T-branded smartphones), but the phone is limited to 500kbps, like all non-smartphones on an AT&T’s $50 unlimited talk, text and web plan. Bluetooth doesn’t have
